The Body of Evita

Through movement, theatrical imagery, projections, and a sound collage incorporating Eva Perón’s speeches and music by Portishead, the work examines the paternalistic state and the complex relationship between public history and private life. Evita appears divided between the woman and the political myth: adored as the protector of the poor while her image, voice, and body are transformed into instruments of the state.

As Evita’s body weakens and collapses, it becomes a metaphor for a country also coming apart. Her illness, death, and the later displacement and preservation of her body foreshadow Argentina’s cycles of authoritarianism, violence, political instability, and the economic collapse of 2001. In Ciudad Evita, the female body becomes both intimate and national territory—a body claimed by political power, collective memory, and competing versions of history.
